Police: Be aware of new traffic signals

MONROE - The Monroe Police Department reminds people that there are new stop signs, turn lanes, speed zones and traffic lights near the new Walmart.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said there have already been numerous complaints about drivers who fail to stop at the new traffic lights at the 6th Avenue West and West 7th Street intersection.

"The lights have been set on red flashing mode, which requires all vehicles to stop before proceeding," Kelley said. "In essence, this is the same as stop signs and it's a four-way stop."

The new stop signs, in conjunction with designated turn lanes, are at 6th Avenue West and 2nd Street and County N, all north of the Walmart building.

The entire stretch of road, from West 8th Street to County N, has been zoned for 25 miles per hour.

Kelley said police officers will be in the area for the next couple of weeks to enforce the speed limits, stop signs, turn lanes and the traffic lights.

Drivers faces citations between $160 and $180 for failure to observe the rules of the road.
