Plenty on tap this holiday weekend

MONROE - As he wrote about the first Independence Day, John Adams said he saw future generations celebrating the day with fireworks and parades.

Monroe and Brodhead will celebrate the holiday with parades and fireworks and a few more activities.

The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department will have its Fourth of July celebration at Twining Park. The day's events begin at 11 a.m.

Activities include children's games and a dunk tank at 11 a.m.; all day co-ed slowpitch and volleyball tournaments, and horse and wagon rides from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Tot Lot singers perform at the bandshell at 10:15 a.m., while the City Band concert will be at 8 p.m. at the bandshell; fireworks are at 9:30 p.m. with the sky concert to follow.

In Brodhead, the annual parade begins at noon at Legion Park followed by a chicken barbecue at Veterans' Park. Tours of the fire station are also available. There is a food stand and music at the Industrial Park at the south end of town.

Fireworks are scheduled to begin at dusk at the Industrial Park.

Wiota will celebrate with ball games, volleyball games and a Big Wheel kids race. There is also a street dance at 8 p.m.

The Green County Historical Museum, 1617 9th St., will also be open from 1 to 4 p.m.
