MONROE - Public defender Guy Taylor said Maquita Q. Stokes' case, in which she is accused of drunkenly causing the crash that killed an 81-year-old Browntown man, is "scheduled to come to a resolution."
Stokes, 31, Rockford, appeared in Green County Circuit Court Tuesday for a pretrial conference to discuss and set a plea hearing for Jan. 27, where she will likely plea to some of her felony counts while others are dismissed.
Stokes is charged with two Class D felony counts, one for homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and one for homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited-alcohol concentration. She also faces four Class F felony counts; two for injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle; and two for injury by use of a vehicle with a PAC.
Court records indicate that on Aug. 8, 2013, Antone C. Grawehr and his wife Alma Grawehr, 82, were on their way home from their son's wedding in Milwaukee, traveling westbound on Wisconsin 81 south of Brodhead when Stokes' eastbound SUV swerved over the center line and collided head-on with the Grawehrs' silver Dodge Caravan.
Antone Grawehr died on scene due to cardiac arrest, after the force of the crash crushed his legs, broke his ribs, fractured his pelvis and left him with multiple lacerations and head injuries. His wife survived with a broken wrist.
Stokes' passenger Charlotte M. Jones, 41, had her arm fractured in the crash. Stokes also suffered serious injuries including a broken pelvis, broken ribs and a broken leg, and was flown via Medflight helicopter to a Rockford hospital the day of the crash.
Stokes will likely plead guilty to some of the charges she faces and for a less harsh punishment agreed to by defense and prosecution. Taylor said he is hopeful probation will be considered due to Stokes' otherwise clean record.
