PLATTEVILLE — A Platteville police officer shot and killed a dog that was attacking another police officer the morning of Jan. 29.

Police received a report of a dog running at large around 11 a.m. Officers located the dog, which then returned to its residence.

According to a police Facebook post, an officer tried to discuss the ordinance violation with people inside the house when, as a resident opened the door, the dog got out and started attacking the officer.

After the dog attacked the officer a second time, Officer Nate Auz “used deadly force” to kill the dog to prevent further attacks, police said.

Officer Jared Bartelt was treated at Southwest Health for minor injuries.

The owner of the dog, Jennifer Jerrett, 46, Platteville, was cited for third-or-more-offense animal running at large.

Police were assisted by UW-Platteville police.

The incident is under investigation.
