MONROE - Pirates on the Square is setting sail and Main Street Monroe's offering the public a chance to own part of the summer exhibit.

"There's lots of ways to take home a piece of the pirates," according to Main Street Monroe Promotions Committee co-chair Kareesa Wilson. Green County Humane Society and Main Street are partnering for a raffle. Raffle tickets are being sold at Heartland Graphics, Café Claudeen, and out of the Main Street offices by calling (608) 328-4023. Three winners will be drawn during the Chilifest activities Saturday, Oct. 6. The first winner will choose a palm tree, parrot, or tiki. The other two winners each get a signed, unpainted Zoli carving. In addition, a silent auction will be held during Chilifest for all the small pieces of the Pirates on the Square including whiskey barrels, Peter Pan, photo cut-outs, palm trees and tikis. And finally, the largest carvings and the ship will be sold at set prices.

"It's been another phenomenal summer for us and the pirates have again exceeded our expectations," Wilson said. "The sale of these pieces is crucial for us being able to move forward with another event next year."

For the past two years, Main Street Monroe's developed a theme and art pieces for a summer-long event. Last year's "Zoo on the Square" and this year's "Pirates on the Square" were designed to make the Square appealing for children and adults alike. "These events have been pivotal in making downtown the place to be," Wilson said. "In the past, people weren't drawn downtown. These summer themes have helped to bring people onto the Square to see all that downtown has to offer."

This weekend's Chilifest event will mark the official end of "Pirates on the Square." Raffle tickets will be sold through Saturday morning prior the drawing. Ticket-holders do not have to be present to win. The four largest pirates pieces are being sold at $2,500 each. The ship's price is available by request.

"We've been so encouraged by the generosity this community's businesses and individuals have shown for our events," Wilson said. "We're asking the general public to come down and help us keep the momentum going."
