Charles Schuringa, retired since 2006, is busier than ever. As Tenth Ward alderman in Monroe, Schuringa says he takes time to look at his area "to see what needs to be done" and makes a point to meet the people of his ward.

But Schuringa is a multitasker and says he "does a little bit of everything." He was a lumberyard foreman for 23 years, has poured concrete and has been a volunteer probation officer.

In the summer they are busy with a five-acre garden that includes three acres of sweet corn, 125 tomato plants and about three rows of potatoes. The Schuringas share their garden with Todd and Terri Hughes.

And he raises 150 chickens a year. All that extra food is shared with their six children and 11 grandchildren, as well as with neighbors and friends.

Schuringa is a firm believer in "doing family things." He says the time a husband and wife spend working together strengthens their relationship and is good for the children.
