Tammy Derrickson is the director of the Behring Senior Center. She is responsible for the overall operation of the center. She enjoys program planning, but getting to know the people who come though the center is her biggest joy.
"It's the best of jobs," Derrickson said. "I have a lot of creative freedom. I'm an idea person. I put the idea out there and we work together to make it work. I have a terrific staff and a lot of support form the city."
In her free time, Derrickson collects antique brooches. As a child, she played with her great-great aunt's brooches and still wears a brooch every day. She will present a program at the center Sept. 25, with stories to tell about many of the pieces.
Derrickson is the mother of Isaac, 4, and Hannah, 9.
What do you do together as a family?
We're big movie watchers - every Friday, and the kids like to go on picnics.
Whom do you admire and why?
I admire the (Senior Center) board president Bill Schwaiger. He's been the president for several years and was instrumental in keeping the building project moving. He posses a vast amount of business knowledge ... I've learned a lot form him.
What book have you read lately?
(A Senior Center program) just finished a year-long book club-A Year of Mysteries. The last one we read was an English mystery "Death of a Maid" by M.C. Beaton.
If you could invite three people, living or dead, to dinner, who would they be?
My grandpa, who's passed away, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
