MONROE - Although disciplining students is a big part of his job, Michael Brukwicki said over the years it's one of his least favorite things to do. Monroe High School's assistant principal won't be doing it for much longer, though, and has plans to officially retire after 25 years on the job.

His retirement will be, as the saying goes, to stop making a living and start making a life.

"It's a mixed blessing," Brukwicki said of his approaching retirement.

He said over the years it's been a fun job and he's glad to say he never took himself too seriously.

"Humor is part of getting along in this environment," he said.

The people, the staff and the children are among what he'll miss most.

The decision to retire was made long ago, Brukwicki said. After 40 successful years of working he decided it was time to enjoy life with his wife and grandchildren. Woodworking, yard work, camping, traveling with his wife and a little construction are all things that will soon occupy his time.

Children making mistakes is just a part of life, Brukwicki said. They deal with it, smile and move on - much the same way he will.
