GLEN HAVEN - Aaron and Dana Cooley will host a pasture walk from 1 to 3 p.m. June 27 on their dairy goat farm at 8624 Diamond Grove Road, Glen Haven.

The Cooleys started milking goats in 2011 in Barneveld. They relocated to Glen Haven in 2013 and currently milk 200 dairy goats. Feed costs are their top expense and major concern but rearing young stock on pasture has dramatically lowered the cost of production and has saved labor, according to a news release. They achieved this without major fencing costs and manage the stock with a single electric wire. They remodeled a stanchion barn as the milking parlor and holding area and in 2016 built a 70-by-76 addition to an existing loafing shed as their herd has increased in size. For more information, contact UW-Extension dairy and livestock agent Kory Stalsberg at 608-776-4820.

Another dairy goat walk will be at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 9 on the farm of Ethan and Jade Proksch, S3830 Newton Road, Genoa. The Proksches milk 400 goats and have been steadily improving their 22 acres of pasture for the past six years, according to the release. They added a new milking shed, and visitors will have a chance to look at the kid barn and dry shed. For more information on this event, contact the UW-Extension agriculture agent Vance Haugen at 608-326-0223.

Both pasture walks are free and registration is not required.
