DARLINGTON - The ceiling above the alter at Holy Rosary Catholic Church
collapsed at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, causing debris and wood to crash to the
floor.
Four people were in the church at the time of the collapse. No one was
injured, church secretary Marge Carr said.
"They had just lit a candle (at the alter)," she said. "They heard what
sounded like someone walking on the roof. They said Jesus must have been
with them because they just started walking away when the ceiling fell."
Parishioners arrived at the church at about 6 p.m. to clean up.
The ceiling fell due to age of the church, Dan Lange said. Lange, a member
of the congregation, was one of more than 50 people who helped clean up.
