MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is offering a fall terrace tree planting program.

Residents who would like a tree to be planted on their terrace should stop at the department's temporary office at 1064 5th Ave. across the street from PDC to pick out a tree and pick up a flag. Tree orders for the fall planting are due Oct. 6. Residents need to place a red flag by Oct. 16 where they prefer the tree be planted on the terrace. Planting will begin the week of Oct. 23. Trees available for the fall planting include: American Sentry Linden $78, Regal Prince Oak $73, Deborah Maple $64, and Emerald Lustre Maple $64.

Low Growing Tree available is Ivory Silk Lilac $67.

A limited number of each type of tree have been reserved with the nursery. The cost listed for the American Sentry Linden and the Regal Prince Oak is one half the regular cost of the tree. The other half is being covered with a 2017 Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry grant.

The price of the tree includes work by the parks department to plant, stake, mulch, fertilize and water the tree at the time of planting. The homeowner is also given information from the nursery on care after planting. Trees are guaranteed for one year. These trees are only for city residents and can only be planted on the terrace, the grassy area between sidewalk and street.

Several items to consider when ordering a terrace tree: If you have overhead utility lines over your terrace only a low-growing tree may be planted. That tree this fall is Ivory Silk Lilac. On corner lots at street intersections, no tree shall be planted in the triangle formed by measuring 30 feet from the intersection of the curb lines of each adjacent street. Spacing between new trees should be a minimum of 25 feet. The terrace width should be a minimum of 4 feet. No tree can be planted within 25 feet of a fire hydrant. No tree can be planted nearer than 10 feet from a water stop box.

A flyer with the different trees that are available can be picked up at the temporary parks department location.
