Parks and Recreation department has trees for planting program

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has trees available for the Fall Terrace Tree Planting program. All orders must be placed with the park and recreation department by Friday, Oct. 4 and planting will begin the week of Oct. 21.

Trees that are available for the fall planting season include:

• Deborah Maple trees. Trees have red foliage in spring and become dark bronze-green in summer. The tree grows to about 40 to 60 feet and costs $39.

• Emerald Lustre Maple trees. Trees are similar to the Emerald Queen, but with more vigorous and a better branching habit. There are glossy, green foliage with red tips on new growth and turns yellow in the fall. Trees grow to be 50 to 60 feet and are priced at $39.

• Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac trees. Trees are sturdy and compact in habit and will flower at an early age. White flower plumes grow to be 10 to 12 inches long. The tree requires a well-drained site and no high nitrogen fertilizer. Trees grow to be 15 to 25 feet and are priced at $49.

Trees are for terrace planting only and will be planted by the Monroe Parks Department. The department will stake the desired location and contact Digger's Hotline prior to planting. At the time of planting, the department will mulch, water, fertilize and stake the tree and leave care instructions with the homeowner. The trees are guaranteed for one year.
