Parks and Rec department has one-day programs on tap

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has several one-day programs planned and each has openings. They are:

• Milkshakes and Monet, Monday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., is sponsored by Monroe Morning Optimists. Children 8 to 12 years old will gather at Northeast Park to paint on a small canvas and enjoy a milkshake when they're finished.

• Ninja Day, Tuesday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., is sponsored by Monroe Morning Optimists at Northeast Park. Children 6 to 12 years old will have to climb through laser beams, test their balance through an obstacle course and see how truly Ninja they can be.

• Shopkins, Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Northeast Park, is sponsored by Brennan's Country Market. Children 4 to 8 years old will shop their way through a series of shopping activities and games.

• Toadly Wild, Thursday, program for 4- to 12-year-olds is 9 to 10 a.m. and show is 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Northeast Park sponsored by Monroe Kiwanis. Show is free but must register as space is limited. Program designed as an introductory to the world of reptiles where children can get to touch and see live animals up close.

• Mini Mommy and My Dolly, Aug. 14, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Northeast Park, sponsored by Cliff and Dorothy Reasa Community Charitable Fund of the Monroe Fund. Children 3 to 8 years old bring their favorite dolly and learn to nurture and care for them like all mommies do.

• P.J. Masks in Training, Aug. 15, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Northeast Park sponsored by Cliff and Dorothy Reasa Community Charitable Fund of the Monroe Fund. Children 3 to 8 years old help save the day and come dressed as their favorite P.J. mask or in your P.J.s.

• Soda Pups, Aug. 16, sponsored by Monroe Public Library and Colony Brands is for 4- to 10-year-olds. Program is from 2 to 3 p.m. at the former EMS building, 1821 12th St., followed by the show 3 to 4 p.m. at the library. The program will include crafts, games themed around puppies, then a dog show with performing Pomeranians doing tricks.

• Amazing Race, Aug. 17, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., sponsored by Monroe Lions Club, for children 6 to 12 years old. Children will have a variety of races and obstacle courses at Northeast Park.

• Down and Dirty, Aug. 21, 10:30 to 12:30 p.m., sponsored by The Monroe Times for children 5 to 12 years old. Participants will play mud kickball, shaving cream dodgeball and water balloon crossfire. Wear old clothes and bring a towel to Recreation Park South shelter.

• Cinderella Comes to the Square, Aug. 24, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Courthouse lawn. The event is sponsored by Colony Brands. There is no age limit and the program is free, but children should register and be accompanied by an adult. Children drop in to play games and meet our Cinderella and other princesses. Come dressed in fanciest outfits for Concert on the Square.

Most programs are $12 for residents and $17 for non-residents. Register online or stop at the Park and Recreation temporary office at the Streets Department, 1064 5th Ave. More information is available by calling 608-329-2460.
