Pantry donations targeted

MONROE - The nine-day deer gun season begins today and hunters who have extra venison can donate meat to local food pantries.

"Target Hunger" is a program created by the Community Action program to help local food pantries provide meat to families in need.

Sen. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, donated a deer last year to a local food pantry. He said it was easy to do and said the program is worthwhile for everyone involved.

"Hunters can simply drop the deer at one of the many participating area meat processors," he said. "There is no cost to the donor, but Target Hunger appreciates financial contributions that help cover the cost of CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) testing and processing."

Target Hunger members hope to build on the 700 deer that were donated, tested, processed and distributed to food pantries in 2007. Schultz said the goal for 2008 is 2,000 deer.
