MONROE - Parker Palmer, founder and senior partner of the Center for Courage and Renewal, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 in the concert hall at the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St. A reception will follow in the Frehner Gallery. The free event is open to the public.

Palmer is a writer, speaker and activist. His latest book is titled "Healing the Heart of Democracy."

Palmer said he is deeply concerned about the degree of polarization in American politics and society. The federal government shutdown and the near default on the national debt are the most recent signs of this polarization.

Palmer holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley, as well as 11 honorary doctorates, two Distinguished Achievement Awards from the National Educational Press Association, and an Award of Excellence from the Associated Church Press.

He is the author of nine books, including "The Courage to Teach."

A national survey of 10,000 educators named Palmer one of the 30 "most influential senior leaders in higher education and one of the 10 key "agenda-setters" of the past decade.

In 2010, Palmer was given the William Rainey Harper Award, named after the first president of the University of Chicago, by the Religious Education Association.
