MONROE - Two wards have candidates running unopposed in the April 5 election.
After serving six years on city council, Jan Lefevre is asking voters in Ward 4 to give her a fourth term.
Reid Stangel is seeking his first term in Ward 8 to replace Dan Henke, who chose not to run again.
Lefevre listed several city issues that she has successfully helped to resolve in the past, which include preventing assessments to property owners for road infrastructure and influencing the design of steps for better safety on the north side of the downtown Square.
Her leadership experiences, other than on the council, comes from involvement in a variety of community organization boards and committees.
Stangel has no previous experience in politics, but has been the director of a non-profit organization for 23 years, as well as a member of the Monroe Police and Fire Commission; and is involved with many community, church and school organizations.
Both Lefevre and Stangel are familiar with the new challenges facing the council, with state shared revenues expected to be cut.
Lefevre advocates getting an early start to preparing the city's 2012 budget, and she specifically noted non-essential expenses, operating expenses and capital expenses as areas in which the city may have to cut.
To improve economic development in the city, Stangel says he believes growth can be a positive for the city, but wants it to be controlled and done with solid, committed businesses.
Lefevre wants the city to return to its "original marketing plan" - though she did not detail that plan - and to work to develop new business for the city.
Lefevre finds that a proposed new destination center focused on the county's cheesemaking industry is a positive step for tourism in Monroe and the area, stating that it promotes the myriad industries associated with the making and eating of cheeses, the beautiful scenery and other points of interest.
Stangel believes the several organizations and government entities currently involved with promoting tourism should continue to produce good results.
