Opening ceremony Sunday for Habitat home

BRODHEAD - Green County Habitat for Humanity will have a home dedication ceremony at 5 p.m. Sunday.

It culminates a home building project started when ground was broken last October.

Habitat for Humanity of Green County and approximately 100 volunteers have built a home with a family in urgent need of one.

Christine Withrow and her grandsons, Cody and Toby Rader, will live in the new home. Together, they put in well over the required 250 hours of "sweat equity" helping to build their home. They will repay the cost of the home over a period of 30 years with a no-profit, no-interest mortgage, illustrating Habitat for Humanity's objective to give families a "hand up" rather than a "hand out."

"I am still just in awe of the dedication and generosity of all the volunteers that made this possible," Withrow said. "It's no longer a dream, it is reality."

The home is located on Second Street just west of County T on the east side of Brodhead. A brief dedication program is planned for 5 p.m.

Volunteers, local sponsors, Habitat for Humanity representatives and the partner family will gather at the home to celebrate the hard work, the generous financial backing and the community support that made this home possible.

"We are so appreciative of all the efforts by our volunteers from all corners of Green County, those who worked at the build site and those who worked behind the scenes, those who gave of their time and skills and those who supported us financially," said Carol Holmes, president of Habitat for Humanity of Green County. "We truly could not accomplish our mission without our churches, the volunteers and the financial support. Together, all things are possible."

Green County Habitat for Humanity will turn its focus to Browntown, where two homes will be built this year. One home will be built in partnership with Thrivent Builds and the Green County Chapter of Thrivent for Lutherans, which will provide 75 percent of the needed funds. The other home will be built in honor of Charlie Workman, "touted as the father of Green County Habitat."
