DARLINGTON — One person died Wednesday in a rural Argyle house fire, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office.

The name of the person is being withheld pending notification of family, said Sheriff Reg Gill.

A call from a neighbor at about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday was one of several calls alerting authorities to the fire at 17694 S. Lake Rd., Town of Fayette.

The first floor of the older two-story farmhouse already appeared fully engulfed by that point, with someone still inside the residence. Firefighters from Argyle, Blanchardville and Darlington responded immediately, according to Gill.

The body of the person was located inside after the fire was extinguished. The house, located on the southeastern edge of Yellowstone Lake State Park, is considered a total loss.

Fire marshals from the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating the fire, along with the sheriff's office and Argyle Fire Department.

"Anytime there's a death in a fire, the fire marshals come down," Gill said.

The cause of the fire was unknown as of Thursday morning. Gill said there was no indication of a suspicious cause at this point.
