MONROE - The former Berghoff and Blues Festival is getting a name change: The Monroe Lions Club, along with Minhas Craft Brewery, is sponsoring the first Minhas Oktoberfest on Saturday in the Minhas parking lot.
Monroe Lions Club sponsored a blues festival starting with Berghoff and Blues in 2000. The Berghoff and Blues festival lasted through 2008, but was canceled in 2009 due to funding issues. Last year, during Cheese Days, the festival resumed under a new name - the Huber Bock and Blues.
The blues festival is a Lions Club event, with the brewery helping out on planning and logistics, said Gary Olson, president of brewery operations.
"We like to help the Lions out and it helps them raise funds," Olson said. "It gets people to taste our beer, especially those who normally wouldn't have."
This year, the brewery is featuring its Oktoberfest beer, a seasonal drink that was first brewed last year, Olson said.
The Oktoberfest event is a smaller version of Berghoff and Blues, said Ron Scharr, president of the Lions Club, adding that the club wanted to continue its tradition of providing a music festival on the brewery grounds.
Minhas Oktoberfest will continue under the new name every year on the third Saturday in September, according to Lion's Club treasurer Greg Boll.
Three musical acts are scheduled to perform: Alex Wilson, October Soul, and The Jimmys.
Alex Wilson, from Madison, appeared at the Berghoff and Blues Festival in 2006. He also placed sixth at the 2011 International Blues Challenge. He will be performing from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
October Soul came well recommended from members who have seen the group the last two years at Summerfest in Milwaukee. The group will perform from 4 to 7 p.m.
Jimmy Voegeli of New Glarus has been a regular at previous festivals. This year, his band, the Jimmys, will be performing with Bun E. Carlos of the band Cheap Trick. They are scheduled to perform from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
The event is free; money raised from food and beverage sales will be used to support community efforts, such as providing support for those with vision or diabetes. "We are a non-profit organization and all the money we raise goes back to the community," Schaff said.
The Lions will be serving various food items, including pork sandwiches and hot dogs. There will also be a 50/50 cash raffle with tickets available at the event.
