Offering enrichment opportunities for students

ALBANY - Besides my duties as a middle school science teacher at Albany, I also am the district talented and gifted coordinator. Whenever possible, Albany staff tries to provide enrichment opportunities in the classroom by differentiating instruction for the students. Besides our excellent academic programs, Albany offers many additional opportunities for students. Most of the enrichment programming takes place at the middle school level, though we are adding new opportunities at the elementary and high school level every year. Much of our programming is offered through our membership with the Greater Dane County Talented and Gifted Network (GDCTAGN).

Math meet: Math competitions are held in March and April. Separate meets are held for grades 5 and 6, grades 7 and 8, and for high school. The students compete both for team and individual awards. Middle school practice sessions are held weekly.

Math 24: An exciting game where students add, subtract, multiply or divide four numbers on a card to come up with the answer "24". The game is fun, fast-paced and very educational. The difficulty level rises from single digits (4th grade) to algebra and exponents (8th grade).

Yahara River Writers: GDCTAGN sponsors a writing competition, with the winners published in an anthology every year. Students in grades 5-8 will submit poetry, cartoons, editorials and short stories hoping for the opportunity to be published. Albany Middle School is able to submit two entries of each type for each grade level.

College Matters: This year a group of high school juniors will be attending a college forum at the University of Wisconsin where they will participate in panel discussions and learn about honors programs at the UW and other private colleges.

D.R.I.V.E.N: High school freshman and sophomore class officers will take part in a leadership conference at the UW in December.

In addition to the above programs, I am working on creating some enrichment programs for the younger grades. These programs may involve reading, creative problem solving or math enrichment. The elementary programs would be voluntary and take place during recess. If you wish to contact me regarding the TAG program, you can call me at the school or e-mail me at susan.gorksi@albany.k12.wi.us.
