MONROE - Some landmark businesses are for sale in Green County.

Most of the owners interviewed say they are not really retiring, just cutting back or going on to other interests.

Randy Gobeli has put up for sale both the Gasthaus Motel on 30th Street in Monroe and the Swiss Aire Motel along Wisconsin 69 in New Glarus, although he's looking to sell only one of them. He put both on the market so the buyer has a choice, he said.

His son, Eric, and Eric's wife, Tracy, will run the motel that doesn't sell first.

Gobeli has owned the Gasthaus for seven years and Swiss Aire for five years, and said the businesses have done well.

He said he is not really retiring, he just doesn't want to work as hard.

"It consumes a lot of our time," he said about the business, even while Eric and Tracy run the Swiss Aire.

"We have other business interests," he said. "We're just paring down."

The Gasthaus is listed for $895,000 and the Swiss Aire is listed for $995,000 with Century 21.

Flannery's Wilhelm Tell Club, on 2nd Street in New Glarus, is a restaurant, bar and conference room, with living quarters upstairs.

The Flannerys have run the Wilhelm Tell Club for 21 years, and before that ran a small bar and grill for 10 years.

Mike Flannery said he and his wife Ruth "want to do something different."

Flannery's Wilhelm Tell Club is listed for $550,000 with ReMax.

Craig and Linda Foreback put My Friends House Bed & Breakfast on Sixth Avenue in New Glarus on the market at the end of May, after running it for six years.

Business was "getting better the last couple of years," Craig said. But his job at the UW-Madison went to full time, and Linda went back to work at Monroe Clinic.

The house is a 1911 Tudor-style mansion designed by noted Madison architects Claude and Starck, with three guest rooms and living quarters.

My Friends House is listed for $375,000 with First Weber, Capital office, Madison.

One couple really ready to retire is Mike and Mary Davis, owners of the M&M Cafe on Main Street in Monticello.

"We are tired, so we are re-tiring," Mary joked.

The Davis' have lived and worked at the Cafe for 15 years.

"Despite the economy, our accounts are showing an increase" in business, Mary said.

M&M Cafe and living quarters is listed for $239,000 with Wilde Real Estate Services.
