MONROE - Just as the region was cleaning up from Wednesday morning's powerful storm, a second wave hit just after 8 p.m., knocking out power lines and downing trees.
Alliant Energy crews working the storm were called in as a safety precaution just before midnight, said Green County Sheriff's Deputy Jim Moldenhauer. But three county roads were completely closed: County C - between County CC and Silver Road near Monticello, County G, south of Wis. 11., and Exeter Crossing Road, just west of County CC.
The roads were blocked by debris and likely closed at least until Thursday morning, when the utility crews are scheduled to resume their work. Highway crews, Moldenhauer said, "were going to try to clear them but with power lines, they are not going to touch them."
Widespread power outages continued throughout the county, he said.
Residents in Monticello reported that all power was lost at one point, and that trees blocked East Lake Avenue and Cemetery Road. Scattered power outages also were reported in other communities, including Albany.
At about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, emergency management officials warned county residents to be prepared to seek shelter immediately, as yet another line of storms - producing heavy winds and cloud-to-ground lightning - bore down on Monroe and central Green County.
There also were unconfirmed reports Wednesday night of house fires, possibly storm related, in Belleville and Browntown.
Among the crews called to assist with the Belleville fire were those from New Glarus, Albany and Monticello.
South Wayne was called to assist Browntown crews with a house fire on Davis Road, south of Buck Road.
