MONROE - A cheesemaking weekend will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center with local historian Kim Tschudy presenting "The Legendary Carl Marty," followed by light refreshments.

There will be free admission to the Cheesemaking Museum from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10. Traditional cheesemaking methods will be used to make a 90-pound wheel of Swiss cheese beginning around 9:30 a.m. in the century-old Imobersteg Cheese Factory. Visitors may stir the kettle and see how Swiss cheese was made more than 100 years ago.

The day will include yodeling, Alphorn blowing, accordion music, Swiss flag throwing and a demonstration "The Making and Sampling of Cheese Spreads" at 1 p.m. by Art Bartsch. On hand also will be restored milk trucks and cans.

The museum and all events during the weekend are free. Food and beverages will be available throughout the day Saturday, featuring a lunch of master grilled cheese sandwiches and cream puffs.

The National Historic Cheesemaking Center is located at the corner of 21st Street and Wisconsin 69 in Monroe. For more information, call the center at 608-325-4636.
