New Glarus suffered sanitary overflow

NEW GLARUS — The Village of New Glarus Wastewater Plant notified residents in the Village of New Glarus and Town of New Glarus about a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) that occurred at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23.

“The situation and plant operations were returned to normal by 3 p.m. Monday, February 23, 2026,” wrote Amby Barnes, New Glarus Clerk-Treasurer in a press release. “Approximately 300 gallons of wastewater overflowed plant facilities towards the Legler School Branch. The Department of Natural Resources was notified and aware of the SSO that occurred in the Village.”

Village officials will continue to monitor the particular area of the collection system and will make plans to have the sewer main cleaned and videoed to ensure there is no issue with the collection system.

The area affected was a grassy area south of the grade school. Clean-up of any solids in the area was performed after the plant was restored to service.

“Village officials do not feel there is a risk to water safety or quality,” Barnes added. Any questions or concerns may be directed to Village of New Glarus Public Works Director Scott McNett.
