NEW GLARUS - New Glarus Music Fest, the annual entertainment event that draws music lovers to America's Little Switzerland, is scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-28.

This year, the summer kick-off event is expanding from the confines of one tented venue to the entire village of New Glarus, and all of downtown is set to be a stage.

Taking a cue from such renowned festivals as South-by-Southwest in Austin, Texas, and Mile of Music in Appleton, the New Glarus Youth Committee, the producers of the event, saw an opportunity to pay homage to New Glarus' heritage of businesses working together for the greater benefit of the community. In this case, everyone is working to raise funds for scholarships and educational programs geared toward area youth.

The festivities will get started Friday evening with a street dance in conjunction with the Lions Club chicken barbecue dinner. Live music from local favorite the Red Hot Horn Dawgs will set the tone for the rest of the weekend, which will feature musicians playing at various businesses throughout Saturday and Sunday with a few establishments presenting "headliners" later in the evenings.

This year, the Youth Committee obtained an open-container permit for the festival so attendees can walk around town while enjoying the entertainment and a beverage, a brand-new aspect to New Glarus Music Fest. In addition to music, there also will be family and kids activities and various tournaments.

May 26 events include the Lions Club barbecue dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Village Park and a street dance featuring the Red Hot Horn Dawgs from 8 to 11 p.m. at 1st Street and 5th Avenue.

May 27 music includes Larry Daehn (accordion) from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at Hutch + Hide; Andy Yaun Rockabilly Kid from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Puempel's Olde Tavern; Marc Barnaby from 1 to 4 p.m. at Glarner Stube; Squirrel Gravy from 3 to 6 p.m. at Ott Haus; Billy Schmidt, "One Man's Blues" from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sugar River Pizza; Maynard T. Thumbtwanger from 8 to11 p.m. at Kleeman's; Playground of Sound from 8 to 11 p.m. at Toffler's; and karaoke from 8:30 to midnight at Ott Haus.

May 28 music includes Mannerchor and Jodlerklub from noon to 12:45 p.m. at Maple Leaf; Marc Barnaby 1 to 4 p.m. at Puempel's; Blue Stone 4 to 6 p.m. at Bramble Patch; Birddog Blues Band 6 to 9 p.m. at Toffler's; and The Invaders 8 to 11 p.m. at Kleeman's.

Performers, venues and show times are subject to change. Additional venues and performers are expected to be added.

The New Glarus Youth Committee raises funds for scholarships, the annual fifth-grade field trip to Chicago, lunch with Santa, the Krafty Kids Summer Program, the post prom party and a "matching funds" program for projects led by New Glarus youth.
