MONROE - Chaundra Deprez leads a full, active life.
Since moving to Monroe from California three years ago with her husband, she has been a full-time mom to two preschoolers while trying to make new friends and become involved in the community. It hasn't always been easy.
Realizing there are others in similar situations, Deprez decided she wanted to do something about it.

"I've been trying to meet moms in similar situations with similar age children who also want to become involved in their community and church," she said recently. "Hopefullly, MOM will fill that spot."
MOM - a support group looking to promote new friendships and a sense of community - held an organizational meeting at Tuesday, Sept. 13 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1724 14th St. Meetings will be held every other Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. The next meeting is set for Tuesday, Sept. 27. There is no cost and child care and snacks will be provided.
Although being organized and held at St. John's, the group is open to anyone in the community.
"We would really like any mom in the community to come and be here,' Deprez said. "We're offering a time for moms to sit back, drop their children off and know they're safe, and relax for 90 minutes."
Deprez said the venture is new to her but she has found the need and community interest there. After meeting with Valerie Blum, Christian Education program coordinator at the church, and two other moms, Jennifer Rikkers and Christine Schindler, the four came up with a program goal and a list of organized programs. They hope the group will meet through the school year.
"We really want to stress this is open to anyone in the community," Blum said, "with our overall goal being offering support to each other while giving back to the community. While it's geared toward moms with preschoolers, you don't need to have preschool-age children to attend. It's really open to anyone."
Among the programs being planned are cooking and nutrition tips, relaxation techniques, recipe exchanges, book/toy swaps and an introduction to sign language. In addition, some days will be set aside as "free days," allowing moms to do personal errands, without children.
"We're really hoping this can be a loosely structured session where moms can just get together and make new friendships," Deprez said. "While we're planning organized programs, if a topic comes up and moms just want to discuss that topic, we'll go with it."
