National Historic Cheesemaking Center: The birthplace of Philadelphia Cream Cheese

The Blue Label Cheese Factory in Winslow, Ill., started by Fred J. Karlen in 1904, was the birthplace of Philadelphia Cream Cheese. The secretary of Blue Label Factory, Mae Limacher, would go to the Winslow Post Office each day with a half dozen packages of the cheese - all neatly wrapped - to be sent to customers all over the country. This special cream cheese was perfected by one of the cheesemakers of the Blue Label factory. In 1928, Karlen sold the formula to Kraft, and is now known as Philadelphia Cream Cheese. Questions or
