On Aug. 27, 1938, Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States (1923-1929), was presented with a full wheel of Swiss cheese in appreciation for his interest in the industry. William Olson and John Geigel represented the producers at the presentation in Superior. The 146-pound wheel was made by the late August "Gust" Schmid, the father of Monroe's Bill Schmid, at the Jenny Cheese Factory, Clarno. The above is the original which was signed and presented to Emery Odell by President Calvin Coolidge. The piece has been carefully handled, placed in an acid-free envelope, in a coroplast carton and stored in the climate-controlled archives room of the National Historic Cheesemaking Center.
