On Aug. 27, 1938, Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States (1923-1929), was presented with a full wheel of Swiss cheese in appreciation for his interest in the industry. William Olson and John Geigel represented the producers at the presentation in Superior. The 146-pound wheel was made by the late August "Gust" Schmid, the father of Monroe's Bill Schmid, at the Jenny Cheese Factory, Clarno.
