In 1857, train service was brought to Monroe by the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad. In 1888, J.T.W. Jennings was commissioned to design a new passenger depot (above), at a cost of $4,989, after the original depot was found to be too small. The last passenger train left the depot June 20, 1958, while freight service continued until the depot's closing in 1979. Saving the depot from demolition, Historic Monroe moved the structure in 1993 from its original location to the corner of Wisconsin 69 South and 21st Street. The restored structure continues to serve the public as the Green County Welcome Center and the National Historic Cheesemaking Center museum, open for its 21st season.
