Marion Burgy of Monticello was the first Cheese Days Queen, reigning at the sixth Cheese Day festival on Oct. 2, 1923. Monroe was first promoted as the "Swiss Cheese Capital of the USA" during this time. Bands from Monroe, Browntown, Brodhead and New Glarus provided entertainment. Sebastian Duerst and Oswald Babler, from New Glarus, were honored as the last remaining original Swiss colonists.
