Photo supplied by the National Historic Cheesemaking Center
The Cheesemakers Ball, a dance, dates to the late 1800s. Shown are cheesemakers who attended the Cheesemakers Ball at Turner Hall on Thursday, Dec. 14, 1899. As reported in the Monroe Times Dec. 15, 1899, the dance was well-attended, lasting until a late hour. Darling's Orchestra played for the dance. The handwritten caption in the lower right corner translates to "after the cheesemakers ball" showing the date following the ball. The following individuals are in the photograph but positions are unavailable: Rudolph Benkert, George Altmann, Godfried Bruni, Sam Baumgartner, Simon Rothlisberger, ___ Burkhalter and ___ Krahenbuhl. The National Historic Cheesemaking Center is eager to identify the pioneer cheesemakers of the late 1800s and in this photograph.
