National Historic Cheesemaking Center: Apple Grove Cheese Factory

Apple Grove Cheese Factory, located in Adams Township, Section 3 of Green County, operated near the intersection of County A and Apple Grove Road. Through the years dating to 1919, cheesemakers who served the factory were Frank Frankhauser, circa 1919; Walter Ufer, 1930s; Jacob Nussbaum, John Nussbaum, John Aschliman, Alfred Schild, Walter Schild, 1942; Clarence Jenny, 1952-1958; Erwin Rufener and Paul Rufener. Over the years, the factory primarily made Swiss cheese, then produced brick, muenster and farmers cheese. In 1938, Walter Ufer, cheesemaker at Apple Grove, introduced the methylene blue test to the area.
