National emergency alert test set for Nov. 9

MONROE - Green County Emergency Management announced that at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will occur.

This will be similar to the test that many people are familiar with; however, it will last approximately 3 minutes. The audio message will repeat "This is a test" but due to programming limitations, the message scroll on television may or may not indicate that it is a test.

EAS is frequently used by state and local governments to send weather alerts and other emergency information but there has never been a national activation or test of the system. This test is part of the national preparedness efforts and enables the President of the United States to address the American public during extreme emergencies.

All participating radio, television, cable and satellite providers who are EAS participants will be taking part in this test. More information is available by calling the Green County Emergency Management at (608) 328-9416.
