MONROE - The talent of those who came to audition Saturday for Monroe's Sesquicentennial play was as varied as the community itself.

More than 50 went to the Stage building, home of the Monroe Theatre Guild, to show off their talents and try out for parts in the play to be performed in November.

"We've had a large number of people show up," director Troy Whiteman said. "We've had entire families here to audition."

Whiteman and his wife, Nadine, will co-direct the play, "The Monroe Gold Files," written by Stephen and Katee Eliason.

Some of the would-be performers showed off a tremendous amount of skill, Nadine Whitman said.

"We've had singers who actually moved us," Nadine said. "The vocal quality in Monroe is high."

Some of the people have acted before but the Whitemans were also impressed with people who have never been on stage before.

One seventh-grade student, who was a little shy, stood out when she auditioned.

"This play gives an opportunity to people who've never acted before," Nadine said.

Stephen Eliason was at the auditions and he, too, was impressed with the people who want to be in the play.

He looks forward to seeing his play performed in November.

"It's a mystery, comedy with some songs," he said as he described the play. "It gives a nod to Monroe's 150 years."

Rehearsals begin Oct. 2 and the play will be performed Nov. 13-16 at the Monroe High School Performing Arts Center.

More actors can be added to the play.

"We could use anywhere from 60 to 150 people. Anyone who loves to sing in the shower is welcome to be in the show," Nadine said.

People interested in being in the show can call Nadine at 293-0928.
