MONROE - As the Monroe Theatre Guild enters into its 40th year, there are several programs available to children and adults to help them understand and appreciate the arts.
"We're working toward educating the public about the theater," guild member Suzanne Miller said.
Programs such as "Scenic Painting Techniques" teaches people how to paint backgrounds and to create the look of rock, brick, wood and marble. A higher-level course teaches people to create foliage and three dimensional surfaces using paint, carving foam and fabric.
"Beginners Lighting Lab" teaches about lighting equipment and specialty lights, how lighting angles effect the stage and how lighting can create a mood for a scene. Students will also learn how to light the stage at the performing Arts Center at Monroe High School.
"We've started some programs to teach people about the behind the scenes work," Miller said. "People know about the stage and performing but they don't know as much about the background to a performance."
"Technical Theatre Fundamentals" is another class to help people learn about what's needed behind the scenes to make a play successful. Students will learn steps to design a show, what types of scenery are needed and basic theater terminology.
For children, there are several programs including set painting, making puppets and how to perform and interpret songs.
In addition, the Youth Choir and Stage Right Youth Theatre Company continues to teach singing, acting and design techniques to children and young adults.
The Monroe Morning Optimists have pledged to help students take part in the guild's programs. No one will be turned away for inability to pay. People who need financial assistance to take part in a program can call (608) 558-3816.
The guild also plans to perform two plays in 2010, "The Rabbit Hole" and "The Music Man." The theatre guild has performed more than 100 plays since it was organized in 1970.
More information about the Monroe Theatre Guild and its programs are available at the guild's Web site at www.monroetheatre.com.
Individual memberships to the theatre guild are available for $15. Family memberships are available for $20.
