MONROE - A Monroe woman arrested Monday for punching her 11-year-old son made her initial appearance Tuesday in Green County Circuit Court.
Shanelle Lynn Sanchez, 32, faces a Class H felony charge of child abuse, a Class G felony charge of intimidating a victim and a Class B misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. If convicted on all counts, she could be imprisoned up to nine and a half years.
The charges stem from an altercation Monday at Sanchez's home in the 2400 block of 8th Street, after she asked her son to fold laundry.
When he told her no and called her names, she allegedly hit him about five times with a belt. When he tried to call police, she allegedly pursued him upstairs and held him down while punching him until she was able to wrestle the phone from him.
The boy's sibling videotaped part of the altercation with an iPad.
Police called to the home a short time later report that the boy had a bloody, swollen nose and was crying. He told an officer his mother "has hit him in the past, but it was never this bad."
Sanchez was "very polite and extremely cooperative" during her arrest and booking, according to an officer's report filed with the criminal complaint.
Sanchez made her court appearance Tuesday by video conference from the Green County Jail. Her signature bond is set at $2,500, with the conditions that she have no contact with her son, except when supervised by adults approved by Green County Human Services, and have no violent contact with her other two children.
Her preliminary hearing is June 26 before Judge James Beer.
