MONROE - A Beloit mother and her nine-year-old daughter will add a pinch of mystery and a sprinkling of spice to their own special brew during Monroe's 17th Annual Chili Cook-Off Saturday.

A noted area psychic, "Janna," known only by her first name, will bring her talents to the Square, along with those of "almost 10-year-old" Byrgen. The young psychic-to-be also uses Oracle cards designed to give "fun and cute" readings for girls and boys of similar age. Janna points out that Byrgen's Oracle cards are named Doreen, Virtue, Mermaid and Dolphin and her readings are always positive and fun.

Although Janna doesn't use her last name in her profession, Monroe and area residents will recognize her as the granddaughter of a Monroe woman who, now deceased, was a former city treasurer. Janna's mother, a Monroe native, married and moved to Beloit, where Janna was born and raised. The psychic maintains those local ties through various area call-in radio station shows and appears at The Dilly Bean on Monroe's Square on a monthly basis.

Janna said the world of psychic abilities always held a fascination for her, but she became more aware of her spirit guides through what she describes as a long spiritual awakening process after the death of her son. As her sense of spirituality emerged, she said she realized a strong desire within herself to help others work through the grieving process. She said she understands the grief process and takes the loss of a loved one very seriously.

"Always trust the universe," she said. "It holds the destiny that is within us; people come and go in our lives to help us gain spiritual insight and work through karmic issues. We have to hold all of it as a positive learning experience."

She charges a fee for her personal and confidential readings and is proud to be doing something she believes not only helps her earn a living, but helps her help others.

"I love this work and feel such a responsibility for others," she said. "This was always just an interest, something that fascinated me. But in the past few years it has become a way of life, and I cannot think of a better way to live life."

Janna does psychic readings for people all over the world, including hundreds of area radio listeners and through private appearances, including celebrities and representatives of law enforcement. She claims to use intuition, all her "Clairs," and psychometry to contact loved ones who have passed, tell future love or money issues and even assist with health situations.

In addition to Byrgen, Janna has a son, Logan, and a daughter Amanda. She said being a parent is the most important thing in her life and that her children share her psychic beliefs and skills. They all talk openly about their own spirit guides and also see ghostly spirits on a regular basis.

She also does "house parties" where she comes to private homes to do readings for small groups. Janna can be reached through her Web site, which is linked through www.thedillybean.com.
