MONROE - A Monticello man was charged Wednesday with burglary after he invaded an Argyle residence Monday.

Shelby James Riley Jr., 30, faces a Class F felony count of burglary, a Class G felony count of intimidating a victim, a Class H felony count of false imprisonment and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct after he allegedly threatened a woman after breaking into private property.

According to a police report, Riley broke into a barn in the Town of Argyle and remained hidden there until a woman on the property entered it to do some work.

The woman said Riley then emerged from the shadows of the barn, wearing a ski mask, boots, camouflage pants, a black T-shirt and gloves and wielding baler twine. When the figure made as if to strangle the woman, the woman attempted to flee but stumbled and fell.

Riley then pinned the woman to the ground and immobilized her arms when she attempted to reach for her phone. However, the woman recognized the assailant's gloves and called Riley by name, demanding that he stop. Riley then released the woman and removed his mask.

The woman said Riley followed her throughout the barn while she did her work. He talked to her, reportedly becoming emotional and crying.

After some time, Riley withdrew a handgun and pointed it into his mouth. Riley eventually lowered the weapon and left, although he told the woman that if she called the police about his presence, he would kill himself anyway.

The woman said that Riley's assault made her believe she was in real danger and thought her attacker intended to kill her.

Riley was arrested at his residence, where he denied having been to the woman's property or owning a handgun. Riley said the woman only wanted to get him in trouble.

A $5,000 cash bond was set Wednesday with conditions that Riley have no contact with the woman or the property and that he surrender all firearms to the Green County Sheriff. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 1.

Riley's charges carry a maximum possible sentence of 15.5 years in prison.
