Monticello Homecoming events include variety show, pet parade

MONTICELLO - Monticello Homecoming will be held July 9 through 12. A list of events were announced. Monticello Homecoming is sponsored by the Monticello Community Club, the Monticello Chamber of Commerce, and the Monticello Lions and Lionesses.



All Weekend

The Lionesses will have their food stand open beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. Menu items include brats, hot dogs, barbecue and homemade pies. The Lion's Club will be serving its homemade cheese curds and mushrooms all weekend. The Boy Scouts, the Booster Club and other local organizations will also be on the grounds to serve items.

Softball tournaments will begin on Thursday at 7 p.m. if enough teams have entered. The games will continue all weekend. To register or for more information, call 608-426-4955.



Friday

The Fish Boil will be held at the Octagon Shelter, near the lake. The FFA and FFA Alumni are serving. Dinners begin at 5 p.m. Menu items include fish boil with boiled potatoes, onions, and fish. Prices are $10 in advance for adult dinner, $11 at door or $5 for child's portion.

At 7 p.m., the Homecoming Variety Show will showcase local talent in a free variety show format at Barnaby's Monticello House.

From 8 p.m. to midnight at the main beer stand Sonic Gorillas will be performing. There is no admission charge.



Saturday

Mud volleyball, grass volleyball and 3-on-3 basketball will be happening all day Saturday. Sign up is in advance by contacting the coordinator. Coordinators are: mud volleyball, Kevin Johnson at 608-558-9189; grass volleyball, Braden Rindy at 608-214-4808; basketball, Jacob Marty at 608-558-5493.

Motorcyclists can register at 9:30 a.m. for the Monticello Homecoming Ride at the Lucky's Farm Tavern. The ride leaves at 11 a.m.

Registration for the free kids' pedal tractor pull is at 9:30 a.m. at W. Monroe Street, in front of Monticello Pool House. The event is for ages 3 through 10, with four age classes, a free t-shirt for all, and trophies. No pre-registration is necessary.

At noon, there will be a pet parade. Pooches will parade up and down the paved path between the shelters and the baseball field. Owners and dogs are encouraged to dress up. The parade is separate from the big parade on Sunday. Contests will be after the pet parade, including best trick, owner-dog look-alike contest, most patriotic dog, smallest dog, largest dog, furriest dog and best tail wag. Canoe races will be held around Lake Montesian. Register at the lake at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Races will begin at 2 p.m. Teams will consist of seniors over 55; adult males 17 and older; adult females 17 and older; co-ed; and children, who must be at least 12. There is no fee to enter.

Area firefighter water fights will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday on W. North Avenue, by the pool.

From 1 to 4 p.m. at the main beer tent, The Greenfield Brothers will be entertaining, sponsored by Harvey W. Kubly, C.P.A. and Freitag Financial Services.

At 6 p.m. at the Zwingli Church, in the fellowship Hall, Jonathon Rupp will speak on 5+1 F Green County 1861 to 1965.

At the beer stand from 8 p.m. to midnight Electric Blue will perform with no cover charge. Fireworks will be held at 9:45 p.m. at Lake Montesian. Fireworks are sponsored by the Monticello Community Club and Greenwoods State Bank. Rain delay will be at 9:45 p.m. Sunday.



Sunday

Church services, hosted by Zwingli United Church of Christ, will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Montesian Gardens. Those who attend should bring lawn chairs.

Following the church services, a chicken barbecue lunch will be sponsored by Monticello Community Club. The group is serving half chicken dinners or just chicken. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. at the Octagon Shelter. Carry-outs are available. Delivery service is also available for senior citizens, handicapped or disabled persons within the village limits. Following the lunch is the 2015 Parade. Parade Marshall this year is Roger Gempeler. The theme is "Fun in the Sun? Roger that." The parade will begin at 2 p.m. at the east end of Lake Avenue and will proceed through to the north end of Main Street. Parade entries and monetary donations to help sponsor some of the unique entries, are still being accepted. To participate or sponsor a parade entry, contact Kay Freitag at 608-938-1133.

The mud volleyball tournament and softball tournament will continue.

The bean bag competition will be held at 3 p.m. at the baseball beer tent. The cost is $10 per co-ed, two-person team, single elimination, 32 teams. Registration is the day of the event. For more information, contact Andrew Anderson at 608-279-1430.

There will be music at the baseball beer tent from 3 to 6 p.m. by Precocious.

At about 3 p.m. the Zweifel Brothers will be performing until 6 p.m. at the main beer stand. They are sponsored by Monticello Ford, Inc., and Voegeli Chevrolet Buick, Inc.

The Frenchtown Band will play from 7 to 11 p.m., sponsored by Robel Transfer.

Raffle prizes will be available, including cash prizes, a Limited Edition Leines 10-speed bike, Badger football tickets and tailgate tickets for two, Brewers tickets for four, a Chill and Grill, and a wheelbarrow. Raffle tickets are $5 for a book of six or $1 each and can be purchased at Monticello businesses or from any member of the Monticello Community Club. Proceeds go back to the community. The raffle drawing will be held at 9 p.m. Sunday night at the beer stand. Those who purchase tickets do not need to be present to win.
