Monticello's Main Street, circa 1900. In 1894, the Monticello House hotel was replaced by a brick building after a fire destroyed the original hotel. Knobel and Steinmann's general merchandise store, the first brick building on Monticello's Main Street, was built in 1889 and today houses a quilt shop. The wooden buildings to the north are J. S. Fessenden's furniture store, Kundert's Restaurant and John Lengacher's Headquarters tavern. By 1913, these wooden buildings had all been replaced by substantial brick buildings and new occupants.
