William (Bill) Blum and fiancee Magdalena (Lena) Marty, circa 1912. Dating during Wisconsin winter wasn't for the faint of heart. It isn't visible in the photo, but they are in a horse-drawn sleigh. Blum was a 1905 graduate of Monticello High School while it was still a two-year course of study, and Marty was a 1912 graduate. She was in the first class to graduate from Monticello's four-year high school program. Blum was a World War I veteran, and he and Marty owned and operated the Peoples Supply store on Monticello's Main Street.
