MONTICELLO — Losses are estimated at $140,000 from a fire that destroyed a barn and its contents in rural Monticello last week, according to Monticello Fire Chief Kevin Komprood.
Firefighters were paged to the fire on Gertrude Waelchli’s property at W3737 Krueger Rd. at about 7 p.m. Feb. 21.
The cause appeared to be electrical in nature, Komprood said. No animals were in the barn at the time, and no injuries were reported from the fire.
The 50-by-100-foot structure was a former milking barn with second-story hay storage, Komprood said. At the time of the fire, the barn was being used to store a collector car, three ATVs, three lawnmowers and construction materials.
The fire “wasn’t too hard to keep from spreading, just a matter of getting it controlled,” Komprood said.
Monticello firefighters were on scene about four hours, with assistance from New Glarus, Albany, Monroe, Juda and Evansville crews. The Green County Sheriff’s Office and Monticello Police Department also assisted.
