AVON TOWNSHIP - A Monroe woman was found dead in her crashed pickup truck Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 8, likely more than 12 hours after the accident occurred.

Nicole E. Schultz, 27, was last seen in Monroe the night before, Monday, Oct. 7, at about 10:45 p.m., according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Department. She was said to have been en route to Beloit afterward.

About 45 minutes later, neighbors in the area of the crash near Brodhead told law enforcement they heard a loud noise.

"However, nothing was reported at the time likely due to darkness and the fact (that) the crash occurred well off the road, obscured from view," Sheriff Robert Spoden said in the release.

The smashed-up 1995 Dodge Ram pickup truck was discovered at 2:49 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

According to the sheriff's department:

Schultz was speeding eastbound in the 17000 block of West Wisconsin 81 in Avon Township when the truck veered onto the shoulder of the road. She overcorrected her steering, went off the opposite side of the road and slid sideways through the grass.

The truck then went down a ditch, hit a raised driveway and became airborne. It flew about 144 feet in the air, hit a tree and came to rest in a wooded area.

Schultz was not wearing her seatbelt. Her body was extricated from the truck by the Brodhead Fire Department.

The Rock County Sheriff's Department is continuing to reconstruct the crash and investigate how it happened.
