Monroe School Board: May 18, 2009

On Monday, the Monroe school board:

• Elected Scott Schmidt as board president, Pam Wyss as board vice-president; Bob Erb as clerk, Mary Frantz as deputy clerk and Larry Eakins as treasurer.

• Filled several instructional staff positions for next year. The board hired Bradley Winchester, who has two years experience teaching in Tuscon, Ariz., to teach English at Monroe High School; Brian Bruggeman, a band teacher who has taught 13 years in Orangeville, to teach instrumental music at MHS/Monroe Middle School; Matthew Fieck to teach third grade at Northside Elementary School; Michael Schmidt to teach third grade at Parkside Elementary School; and Jessica Reed to teach fifth grade at Parkside. The board also hired Angela Schmelzer as MMS/MHS/Charter School LMC director. She is currently in the position. Because she is still working on earning her LMC director license, the board hired her on a one-year contract.

• Approved purchasing 25 SmartBoards, which are interactive white boards used in the classroom, from Tierney Brothers for $67,700. Funding for the SmartBoards will be paid for through money from the technology budget, individual school building budgets and Reading First funds.

• Approved purchasing 60 computers from GovConnection for almost $31,814 and 260 19-inch monitors from Dell for $25,870.

• Agreed to purchase Just Five Clicks data management software for $16,750.

• Approved purchasing social studies materials from Teachers' Curriculum Institute for the middle school. The cost is $32,886.

• Set the 2010-2011 school calendar. The first day of school for 2010-11 school year will be Tuesday, Sept, 1. School is scheduled to conclude Friday, June 3. Graduation for the class of 2011 will be May 29, 2011.
