Monroe School Board: June 23, 2008

On Monday, June 23, the Monroe school board:

• Approved a temporary budget for the 2008-09 school year. The budget would increase total expenditures by 3.4 percent, from $29.18 million in 2007-08 to about $30.178 million in 2008-09. Revenue is projected to increase 2.1 percent, from $29.56 million in 2007-2008 to $30.178 million in 2008-2009.

Included in projected revenue is almost $8.403 million from local taxes, up about 1.5 percent from this year's $8.279 million. The total expense for instruction is just more than $13.759 million, an increase of about 1.9 percent from $13.509 million this year.

A final budget must be approved by district residents at the annual meeting.

• Discussed district survey results. Superintendent Larry Brown met with parents of students in all the district's schools to gauge their opinions of each school. The board discussed ways to get more parents involved, but made no final decisions.

• Approved the Alternative Charter School contract for July 1, 2008, to July 1, 2013. The district does not have to have a charter school if it decides it doesn't want one, but the contract gives the district authorization to have one.

• Approved an agreement with the Stoughton School District to hire a visual impairment teacher on a part-time basis. The teacher will work with two students. The district will pay 30 percent of the salary for a cost of about $20,000. The teacher divides her time between Monroe and three other districts.

• Accepted the resignation of Maralyn Martin, Parkside Library aide.

• Hired Lori Hendricks-Soderberg as district school nurse and Andrew Miller as Monroe Alternative Charter School English teacher.

• Approved policies for transportation, bus scheduling and routing, bus safety, bus drivers, student conduct on buses, video cameras on buses, bus contractor, school-owned vehicles, student records and fee schedules.
