MONROE - At a meeting June 13, the Monroe school board:

• Accepted the resignation of instructional staff member Sadie Schwebach, Parkside Elementary School first grade, and support staff member Daryl Miller, seasonal mower at Monroe High School and Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy.

• Approved the retirements of support staff members Vickie Whitehead, student services secretary at MHS, and Carolyn Beach, building secretary at Parkside.

• Authorized the hiring of instructional staff members: Erin Speth, Monroe Middle School business education/elementary keyboarding; Karmyn VanDeWettering, MMS seventh grade math; Jennifer Dailey, Abe Lincoln third grade; Claire Tibodeau, MMS sixth and seventh grade social studies; Ryan Strunz, MHS English; Alla Diakun, district Gifted and Talented coordinator; and Jolene DeNure, MHS special education.

• Accepted donations of $44,930 from Colony Brands Foundation for technology and $5,035 from Colony Brands for MHS Day of Service T-shirts.

• Heard an update on the MHS Day of Service held in May from special education teacher Jenny Moehn. Monroe started the Day of Service, where high school students volunteer their time performing various services around the community, in 2013. Moehn said the program started with 24 sites participating the first year and has grown to 35.

• Discussed hiring School Perceptions to conduct an open enrollment survey to determine why families living in the Monroe school district have chosen to open enroll their children in other districts. Bill Foster of School Perceptions said it would be "more of a conversation" with parents than a survey and should be done in January. Ron Olson, the district's business manager, said Monroe has done this type of survey before but without hiring an outside company.

• Heard the district would receive a free new refrigerator, valued at $3,200, through a rebate program from Schwan's Food Service. The fridge will be used at Parkside.

• Approved retaining Lanz McArdle and Associates as the district's commercial insurance agent and EMC Insurance as its carrier.

• Approved the purchase of 170 heart monitors, including accessories and a three-year software renewal, for about $23,400. Olson said it's the last of the major purchases using funds from the PEP grant. The monitors will be used for health and physical education classes at MHS and MMS.

• Went into closed session to discuss personnel issues.

Board member Dan Bartholf was absent.

MONROE - At a meeting May 23, the Monroe school board:

• Recognized Rudy Bernet, a physical education teacher at Northside Elementary School, for winning the April Lamp of Learning Staff Excellence Award.

• Accepted the resignations of support staff member Deborah Boyer, Northside health assistant, and instructional staff members Robin Marsden, Monroe Middle School counselor; Matt Eastlick, MMS science teacher; Debra Freitag, MMS social studies teacher; and Heather Cassidy, MMS special education teacher.

• Approved the retirement of support staff member Shirley Drye, Northside aide.

• Accepted donations of $100 from the Monroe Arts Center to MMS for its planetarium project and $500 from Monroe Northside Mobil/Olin Oil Company of Brodhead to the MMS math department.

• Gave final approval for 22 policy reviews and revisions.

• Approved the 2016-17 CESA No. 2 contract at a cost of about $14,300, which is higher than last year's contract of almost $3,900. The board agrees to the contract annually, as required by the state, but this year added a new service called JEDI Online Network for $10,500 that will allow the district to provide some online courses, according to District Administrator Cory Hirsbrunner. Compared to alternative providers, she said JEDI will save the district some money.

• Went into closed session to discuss personnel issues.

Board members Amy Bazley, Michael Boehme and Brian Keith were absent.
