The Monroe School Board on Monday, April 27:

• Suspended its election of officers after the board reached a tie vote for president. In the first secret ballot, current board President Scott Schmidt had the most votes but did not receive a majority. Other vote-getters were Pam Wyss and Bob Erb. Wyss won in a ballot runoff with Erb, putting her up against Schmidt. Two more secret ballots each yielded a tie vote. Board member Amy Bazley was absent, resulting in an even number of votes cast. The board suspended the election of officers until its next meeting May 11.

• Accepted the retirement of Jerry Guth, Monroe High School social studies teacher. Guth has been with the district for 36 years. The board also accepted the resignation of Lynn Welander, Monroe Middle School/MHS Spanish teacher.

• Hired Jan Johnson as speech/language pathologist for Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy; Jordan VanEss, Northside fifth-grade teacher; and Jacqui White, MHS English teacher.

• Agreed to allow Mark Woelfel, Northside third-grade teacher, to transfer to a position teaching fourth grade next year. The district will seek a third-grade teacher to replace Woelfel.

• Accepted donations of $200 from Damian and Penny Dunlavey for Lance Smith's Resource Room at Northside Elementary School; $2,000 from Joe Geyer for the MHS Drama and Madrigal/Barbershop programs; and $3,060 from Swiss Colony for Northside's Lab Rats program.

• Approved purchasing "Voyager Timewarp" reading materials for the summer school reading program for $11,615. The materials work well within the two-hour block of time used for remedial reading in six-week summer school sessions, said Jennifer Thayer, director of curriculum and instruction.

• Decided regular school board meetings in May will be May 11 and May 18. The second meeting was moved up a week because of the Memorial Day holiday.

• Adopted a resolution in support of Senate Bill 109, which would allow schools to start before Sept. 1. The board will send a letter to lawmakers noting the district's support of the bill.
