In a meeting on Monday, the Monroe School Board:
- Approved the retirement of Barb Grabow, a first grade teacher at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy and Trudi Stauffacher, who is a career teacher at Monroe High School and a youth apprenticeship coordinator. The board also approved the resignation of Jessica Johnson, who is an EBD teacher at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy and the retirement of Jane Swiggum, a library specialist at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy.
- Monroe Superintendent Larry Brown said administrators are going through the list of cuts following the referendum that voters rejected April 5. There are several teachers retiring in the district, but Brown said that won't remove a reduction. Brown said district leaders will bring the reduction list back to the board and there may need to be additional cuts pending the state aid reduction Gov. Scott Walker is proposing. The district hopes to have Gov. Walker's final budget impact in May.
The board earlier this year targeted a preliminary list of $489,734 in a first round of cuts for 2011-12 if the referendum failed. The district pledged to make $494,652 in cuts in the 2011-12 school year - regardless of whether the referendum was approved. With retirements, the district could cut as much as $557,090. Officials also approved cuts of 5 percent, or $24,500, to co-curricular activities at the high school.
- Approved Sara Lee as the bread provider for 2011-12. Sara Lee, which is the current bread provider, submitted the lowest bid of $11,306.
- Approved the 2011-12 school calendar. The first day of school will be Sept. 1 and the last day will be June 1.
- New board member Michael Boehme was in attendance. He will be sworn in at the next meeting on Monday, April 25.
