MONROE - Two Monroe residents were charged with substantial battery Thursday after they reportedly struck a woman hard enough to cause seizures.
Paige Alexandra Gilman, 22, and Thomas Robert Schmid, 27, each face a Class I felony count of substantial battery and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. Schmid also faces an additional misdemeanor count of battery.
According to the pair's criminal complaints, the charges stem from an incident Dec. 29, 2015, at a residence in the 500 block of West 21st Street in Monroe.
Gilman and Schmid reportedly became engaged in an altercation with two people at the residence. The altercation quickly became physical, with Gilman reportedly slapping one of the people, a woman, in the face.
Schmid, meanwhile, physically engaged with both people, reportedly striking the second victim repeatedly with his fists. However, he focused his attacks against the first victim, reportedly throwing her across the room, shoving her against a refrigerator and pinning her against the floor while Gilman struck her repeatedly in the face.
The day after the altercation, the victim reported having non-epileptic seizures as a result of the attack, according to the criminal complaint.
The criminal complaint also noted that the victim lost consciousness as a result of the attack, although it is unclear whether she lost consciousness during the assault or during the resulting seizures.
The initial appearances of Gilman and Schmid is scheduled for Feb. 27. They face maximum possible sentences of 1.5 years in prison.
