Monroe police warn against counterfeit bills

MONROE — The Monroe Police Department alerted the public this week to recent reports of counterfeit $20 and $100 bills being passed in the area.

“A couple of local banks have received the suspected counterfeit bills, generally in bank deposits from businesses,” the department announced in a post to Facebook. Police are asking that suspected counterfeit bills be reported to detectives at 608-329-2401.

Counterfeit bills have also recently been an issue in Freeport.

Freeport police are seeking tips from the public to identify two suspects who reportedly worked together to pass fake $100 bills at over a dozen businesses in the city on Feb. 24. The suspects, a man and a woman, even went so far as to use one of the fake bills to pay Girl Scouts selling cookies in front of a grocery store, police said.
